Autumn is my favorite time of the year. I love everything about it. The first chills, the rain, the colors of the forest, the fruits and vegetables of the season… I always welcome it as a release from a summer that was starting to linger too long.
It’s a nostalgic time for me, full of childhood memories in the woods, picking mushrooms, playing with branches, moss, and leaves among the oaks. Where I live now, there aren’t many forests, as it is semi-deserted. That’s why whenever this season arrives, I try to escape to places that provide that autumnal ambiance, filling my small batteries.
El otoño es mi época favorita del año. Todo acerca de él me gusta. Los primeros fríos, la lluvia, los colores del bosque, las frutas y verduras de temporada… Siempre lo recibo como una liberación de un verano que ya empezaba a alargarse demasiado.
Es una época nostálgica para mí, llena de recuerdos de infancia en el bosque, cogiendo setas, jugando con las ramas, el musgo y las hojas, entre las encinas. En el lugar donde vivo ahora no hay muchos bosques, ya que es semidesérticos, por eso siempre que llega esta época intento hacer escapadas a lugares que me proporcionen ese ambiente otoñal y llenen mis pequeñas baterías.
If we add to this that my favorite tree is the holm oak, it seems like the idea is served on a platter. De Estraperlo needed an acorn amigurumi. And that’s where Soraya(Yedra Knits), came into action. At that time, she was editing the Bellota magazine and suggested creating a mascot for its publication.
The mood board included pictures of Jane Birkin, girls on skates with striped socks, and tons of French influences and tomboy style. Mixing that with things Soraya and I have in common, like music and Amsterdam, Jaap, the acorn, appeared.
Si a esto le sumamos que mi árbol favorito es la encina, parece que la idea está servida en bandeja. De Estraperlo necesitaba un amigurumi bellota. Y ahí apareció en acción Soraya (Yedra Knits), quien en aquel momento estaba editando la revista Bellota y me sugirió crear un personaje mascota para su publicación.
El mood board contenía fotografías de Jane Birkin, chicas en patines y calcetas a rayas y toneladas de afrancesamiento y de estilo tomboy. Mezclando eso y las cosas que tenemos en común Soraya y yo, como son la música y Amsterdam, apareció Jaap, la bellota.
But Jaap is not just an acorn. Jaap is a musical acorn. You know the type I’m talking about, those acorns that sing all the time. You know them, right? These musical acorns aren’t easily spotted, but if you frequent forests and meadows, you’ll surely come across one.
Moreover, Jaap is a hybrid of a forest musical acorn and an urban musical acorn since he studies in the city, spending part of his time there. This is not so common among musical acorns, to be honest. Usually, they are one thing or the other, but in this case, both variations are found in a single individual.
Pero Jaap no es una bellota y ya está. Jaap es una bellota musical. Ya sabes de las que te hablo, de esas bellotas que cantan todo el rato. Las conoces ¿verdad? Estas bellotas musicales no se dejan ver fácilmente, pero si frecuentas los bosques y dehesas, acabarás viendo alguna segurísimo.
Además, Jaap es un híbrido de bellota musical de bosque y bellota musical urbana, ya que al estudiar en la ciudad, para parte del tiempo ahí, Esto sí que no es tan frecuente en las bellotas musicales, la verdad. Normalmente son una cosa u otra, pero en este caso se encuentran las dos variantes en un solo individuo.
Jaap is studying “Arts and Sciences of Musical Life” at City Village University. Music is his great passion, and he roams the city with his skates, always hooked to his Walkman, listening to the greatest hits of his favorite bands.
He loves absolutely all kinds of music but has a penchant for French music from the ’60s, English from the ’70s, and disco music from the ’80s. In his mind, this mix makes perfect sense. Check it out for yourself in this playlist and let me know what you think.
