I have been working with crochet in the focus of 30 years. The advantage of crocheting is that it is easy to scratch up if errors occur. What most amazes me is that with the years that go so can I see that my own development of pattern/structure becomes better and better all the time. During the past few years I have made some patterns, which I think is among the best I have been designed over the years. It gives me an incredible feeling that my creativity is moving in the right direction through hard work!

And the most important of all when it comes to crocheting is that you have fun and at the same time it gives a feeling of joy. We are many who crochet in the world and through social media, we get new friends. Long live the hook!!!

How did you learn to crochet? Do you think kids should keep on learning manual skills in a basic school, especially handicrafts? We have had crafts in Finnish schools for decades, everyone had to take sewing classes and wood working classes. I was really inspired by this, but I also know there are many who got traumatized by this. How is it in Sweden?
My mother taught me to crochet when I was about 9 years old. But I was around 13 when I was on summer holiday and I crocheted in cotton yarn DMC 70, thinnest hook that was (Boye 15), and cloths that contained over 300 yards. When I was finished, they were not so large because of the thin yarn and crochet hook!

We also have had crafts in Swedish schools for decades, in both sewing classes and wood working classes. I remember that I rather had wood working, since the textile and sewing was not really my thing.

A few years ago was craft classes here in Sweden – and especially sewing classes – up in the various debates since the School board thought the other topics were more important!!!!!

Your patterns have a strong tribal vibe in them. Are you inspired by any special fashion?
My inspiration for creating designs comes from all possible directions – I see patterns everywhere! It can be from an art exhibition, older crafts and textile….. The graphical meeting between light and dark appeals to me a lot and I have been greatly inspired by walks in the city or out in nature. Other cultures/countries treasures of the patterns appeals to me, as for example in Africa which has wonderful designs and in vibrant colors.

How do you feel about being creative and working on a craft field, or do you have other profession besides of handicrafts?
I have at times been able to support myself on crocheting since I went out of my textile education 1989 with project of crochet that has been going on for several years. Has also worked with exhibitions, lectures, courses, workshops, training of textile teachers and students. As well as the publication of several books. But I have supported myself in part for other jobs such as work as personal assistant, receptionist at various museums and in museums shop. Also working at times with graphic design for small companies.

Working creatively is not an option for me, but it is about the entire me as a person. I have always been creative since I was little and drew/painted on a daily basis. I have been lucky in life and to be able to support myself on my crocheting.

He sido siempre creativa, desde pequeña he pintado y dibujado diariamente.

What would be the best achievement in your career? The ultimate goal why you do crafts and books?
It is actually from my master’s thesis on College education, bachelor’s degree in textile design, Konstfack, Stockholm, Sweden. I had both knitting and crocheting as my graduation project and it was not ”com il faut” that you crocheted on the school I went 1985-1989. My opponent was Inez Svensson (known textile designers in Sweden and the Nordic countries) and she said that I would bet on crocheting because no designer was doing that before me and in itself had not been developed for many decades here in Sweden. I took the gravity of her advice.

Do you think crafting can be a language between people from different places?
Definitely, it is so! We don’t need to understand what the other says but in the crafts unite we have a common language that we can share with others and each other.
